Collecting & Caring for Vintage
What’s the difference between vintage and antique decor?
Antique means a piece is at least 100 years old; vintage generally means 20 to 99. We collect both — vintage decorative objects, stoneware, brass, and furniture carrying the patina of real use. Every piece in our vintage decor collection is an original, never a reproduction.
How do I decorate with vintage pieces without my home looking cluttered?
Give a few meaningful pieces room to breathe instead of spreading small objects across every surface. Group collected items in odd numbers, keep a consistent color story, and let one statement piece anchor each room. Our weekly Style Guides show how we mix vintage into fully designed, modern rooms.
Is vintage furniture better quality than new furniture?
Often, yes. Pieces that have survived 50-plus years were built with solid wood, dovetail joinery, and denser old-growth timber than most furniture made today — weight is a good first test. Browse our hand-collected vintage furniture; every piece is inspected before it ships.
Is reclaimed wood furniture durable?
Extremely. Reclaimed wood comes from old-growth timber that is denser and more stable than newly milled lumber — it has already done its expanding and contracting. Our reclaimed wood furniture is built from solid reclaimed elm; keep it out of direct sun, dust it regularly, and it will outlast nearly anything made new.
How do I use vintage planters and antique pots?
Most antique planters have no drainage holes — keep your plant in a plastic nursery pot and set it inside, which also protects the patina. Weathered vintage planters work indoors and out, and a group of three at different heights makes an instant arrangement. For larger pieces, see our outdoor planters.
Where does Hello Norden’s vintage come from?
We hand-collect from Europe, India, and Morocco — old shops, markets, and estates — and bring each piece home to St. Paul, Minnesota. There is one of each, new finds land every week, and once a piece sells it is gone. That is the point: your home shouldn’t look like anyone else’s.
How should I care for vintage wood and brass pieces?
Less is more. Wipe wood with a barely damp cloth and mild soap — never bleach or ammonia — and give it an occasional wax or oil. Leave brass unpolished unless you prefer shine; that darkened patina is decades of character. Our vintage accessories show brass done right.
